Discovery Gardens – Progress Update

admin | January 18, 2009 in sustainability | Comments (0)

This April saw Ibn Battuta Mall celebrate its first birthday, and the
region’s most distinctive mall has been a huge success, 100% let, with
more than 250 retail outlets, and millions of visitors through the doors.
The mall is conveniently located a short walk from Discovery Gardens,
and few residential developments will be able to boast such an excellent
array of retail facilities on their doorstep.
In addition to introducing more than 50 new brands to the UAE,
including the first Géant supermarket, residents can enjoy the Middle
East’s largest cinema complex, the 21 screen Grand Megaplex, featuring
an IMAX ® theatre, the city’s first Fitness First gym, a fully themed
children’s play zone, and more than 30 restaurants and food outlets.
All this is combined with the mall’s spectacular interiors charting the
travels of the legendary 14th Century explorer Ibn Battuta, and the
1000 Years of Knowledge Rediscovered Exhibition, a celebration of
1000 years of Islamic inventions. Ibn Battuta’s opening hours are 1000
- 2200, extending to midnight from Wednesday to Friday.
The six themed communities of Discovery Gardens are inspired by garden living, and Nakheel’s Environment & Landscaping department (NELD) are working to ensure that the development is one of Dubai’s greenest. More than 80 hectares of the total area of the project has been reserved for greenery. This works out as approximately 30% of the development being green. To ensure environmental sustainability, NELD have also combined state-of-the-art soil amendment technologies to reduce the daily irrigation water demand. This will reduce the required irrigation water by 50%. This technology was pioneered at The Gardens, and will be used across all of Nakheel’s projects, and is achieved by using different types of water retention additives at the time of planting. The selected water retention additives are environmentally friendly and can provide high water holding capacities, particularly in sandy and saline soils.

How Much Can a Stay at Home Mom Really Do For the Environment?

admin | in environment | Comments (7)

Why is it that when women talk about being a stay at home mother, many describe themselves as being “just” a stay at home mom? I’ve always felt that there’s nothing so simple about it. As a stay at home mom you have the power to make a big difference for your family or even for others.

I like to think about the environment, for example. There are plenty of things you can do around the home to make sure that your family lives in a more environmentally friendly way. Some of it can even save money, which is often near and dear to the stay at home mother’s heart.

You’re always home, so that probably means you’re always using some electricity. But at some times of the year you can cut down on your electricity usage by something as simple as opening the blinds during the day and letting the sun light the house. This may not work in the dead of winter or when it’s so hot during the summer that you’d have to turn on the air conditioning, but it can be effective.

You can think about the cleaning supplies that you use. Cut out the harsh chemical cleansers that probably aren’t all that good for your family anyhow and pick ones that are more environmentally friendly.

Think about how you’re cooking for your family. Some cooking methods are far more energy efficient than others. If you like, you can even cook multiple meals at once to save energy.

Remember that when you have the time to cook for your family, you don’t need to waste money on fast food, which also produces a lot of garbage. You can also avoid more prepared foods, thereby avoiding the excess packaging and preservatives.

You can drive less. Being at home means that if the school is within walking distance, you can walk the kids to and from school. Great exercise as well as not using your car.

For that matter, you may be able to walk to the store. I’ve been known to go to the grocery store, kids in a wagon, lock up the wagon outside the store just like a bike, then haul the load home. It does work. You just have to be sure that the store is close enough for this to be a comfortable activity for you.

You can plant an organic garden. Not only is this a great way to have fresh vegetables without pesticides, it’s a delightful way to teach your children about where food comes from. Sometimes the hardest part is keeping the kids away from the garden long enough to get the produce to the table.

There’s more you can do, of course. This is just a quick list off the top of my head to get you thinking. As a stay at home mom I find there are lots of little things I could do that would be much harder if I weren’t at home.

Tapping The Right Business Opportunities

admin | January 17, 2009 in sustainability | Comments (0)

There are so many business opportunities to get into these days. There are no limits because there are many new things to sell and re sell. There is always the food industry. One can sell small time as in homemade goodies being sold to mostly friends and referrals or one can go big time and open up a franchise of say McDonald’s or Burger King.

As for clothes, one can opt to come up with own designs and offer services to your friends and relatives and hten eventually expand. If you wan to go mainstream then opening a store in the mall would already be a big step. So with all these choices, which business should you get into?

The first cosnideration you should have is to know yourself most especially your skill and your talents. Look inside you. Study and observe your behavior and achievements through the years. Ask among the people closest to you when they saw you at your best.

Hopefully upon careful consideration, you will stumble upon answers about your true skills and talents. These skills and talents are already in you so it is soemthing that can be very bankable in any business that you will get into. There will also be your untapped inner resources so ask mentors about these things.

Most of the time it is mentors or elders that have seen you grow up who will know your hidden abilities.

Oftentimes, a person has various talents and skills and among the long list there are certain skills and talents that are most useful in pursuing chosen interests. Interests are hobbies that a person actually enjoys doing so if you have a knack for certain things go for it.

Usually it is this knack that will make you go for the top plum in any field you get into. The determination will follow because there is already that desire to do your best because you like excelling in that field.

After discovering your skills and interests, keep developing all these things and then finally choose the right business for you based on this evaluation. A godo way to start is studying the market and invest ins something that is already in deman. Make sure though that whatever this in demand service or product is not simply a fad. Otherwise you can also delve deeper and see what need of the greater number of population is not yet being served.

There could be a product or service suffering from shortage in your stage but there is an over supply of that same product or service in another state. Maybe you can be the one to bring in that product to your state. You can also creat a need for a new product or service you want to introduce tot the market. It is all about overall marketing . You should be able to have a marekting plan that will work for your product or service.

Tapping the right business opportunity is balancing what you already have and what you potentially can have. Getting the right combination is a sure formula for success. Also keep in mind sustainability so make sure that you have long term goals for whatever business you want to get into. There is also that element of luck so here is to wishing you good luck on the next business opportunity you are planning to take on.

Reconditioning Batteries Helps the Environment

admin | in environment | Comments (0)

Want to make an extra few bucks each month and help clean up the environment too? Reconditioning batteries may be something you would like to do. Online businesses are growing at an incredible rate. These niche sectors are making more and more money every day. Finding cheap auction batteries, reconditioning them and selling them for profit can be done with the proper knowledge.

The use of cordless devices has exploded and created a disposal problem for millions of batteries. A simple technique exists that can be used to create a fresh new battery out of a defunct cell. Batteries, most especially rechargeable ones, are more easy to use than worrying about plug-in electrical devices. What can be done when no outlets are available? Sometimes batteries are the only option. But, using rechargeable batteries is not without its pitfalls.

Even with rechargeable batteries, their lifespan is a problematic issue. They do not last forever. After so many charges, the batteries no longer take a charge and can even burn out the charger. So what is the solution? And how can someone take this information and turn it into a recycling situation as well as a income opportunity?

First off, there are smart chargers. These wonderful devices do not suffer from the same burn out that other chargers do. As many batteries as you desire can be charged and this type of device will continue to perform. One reason many batteries gets burned out and subsequently damage the charger is because the charging operation continues even though the battery is finished charging. Smart chargers stop when the battery is charged.

Equipping yourself with the proper knowledge is important to do the job right as well as to ensure that the operations are done safely. The other prime factor to be successful, besides the knowledge factor is to have the proper equipment needed.

A computerized battery analyzer is needed for testing. A slow battery tester or slow tester is required. For quick twenty minute jolts a thirty amp quick charger is a necessity. Other equipment requirements are: a battery load tester, a battery hydrometer, and test cables. and, Personal protective equipment is needed for this kind of work so eye and face protection as well as protective clothing are absolutely needed. A well lit, ventilated area should be chosen for your work space.

Renewable energy is the wave of the future. Conservation is not only good for the environment but also in high demand for any company that uses energy on a continual basis. Almost every company uses energy to some extent, even if it is as simple as batteries in their cell phone. This is why is reconditioning batteries could be such a great side business.

Tapping into this pool of clients is a simple matter of advertising and targeted marketing. Contacting multiple companies about your service is a simple matter of seeing what they need and finding a way to get it to them cheaper and more efficiently. Companies run well when working at the most affordable level. Finding ways to save companies time and money can produce a demand for any type of service. Reconditioning batteries is a simple way of doing this if you have the right knowledge, training and equipment.

Do Not Fall For A Scam – Find The Best Home Based Internet Business

admin | January 15, 2009 in sustainability | Comments (0)

Finding the best home based internet business opportunity for you is not as easy as it sounds. Sure, you might think you could just go ahead and Google the term, and out of the wealth of information displayed on your screen you will be able to pick the one that is most likely to spell success for you, right? Wrong! Sadly, there are many scam artists on the ‘Net who are just waiting for someone to come by and subscribe to their get-rich-quick scheme. For this reason, get-rich-quick-schemes are now almost synonymous with free home based internet business opportunities.

For example, how often have you searched for avenues to supplement your income with a home based internet business that would provide a little something extra every month perhaps to save up for a wonderful family vacation, or maybe even to take the place of a part time job that is taking you away from your children during the day now only to find the kinds of websites that talk about these wonderful opportunities without actually mentioning what the product or service is? The goal very often is to get your email address, which will then result in a SPAM filled inbox. Other times the goal is to get you to a personal phone representation where suddenly the free opportunity turns out to not be so free anymore.

To not be taken in by a scam artist but to find a genuine home based internet business opportunity, it is important that you know how much money you need to make “bottom line” and how much time you are able to devote to the business. Knowing this will permit you to find different avenues of success. Perhaps your best home based internet business could be that of an affiliate, a sales rep, a freelance writer, a survey taker, or a host of other occupations.

Finding the right internet business income opportunity could be very challenging especially if you have not really tried setting up your own business before. There are many things that you will need to consider when you are putting up an online business.

First, you will need to find an internet business income opportunity that will suit your present skills.
If you are good at designing websites or writing articles, you should work within the realm of your skills. It is always very important to work within your sphere of expertise so that you will no longer spend so much time learning about new things. Although learning new things could be very interesting, you may not really have enough time to spend on learning new tricks anymore especially if you are already running out of time and money.

The second thing that you will need to consider when you want to engage in an internet business income opportunity is the amount of resources that you will need to put up as capital. Note that if you want to want to start a business with small capital, you should first make a study of the every opportunity present in the field. You must have enough information on how things work on a certain online business before you engage into it so that you will not waste too much time and money trying to work something out.

If you are on a tight budget, you should make it a point to find one of those businesses that would require you minimal capital to get started. Do not start a very ambitious project that would require you to put considerable amount of money as capital if you do not want to drain your resources even before you actually get started. Start small if you have to and then slowly expand your business later on. Take your time to get things to a new level.

The third consideration that you must look into when you are looking for an internet business income opportunity is the sustainability of the undertaking. If you really want to be able to spend more time with your ailing parent without worrying where you will get money to pay the bills and buy some food, you should find an online business that could provide you with a long term income.

The Impact of our Environment on Thyroid Function

admin | in environment | Comments (0)

The last studies available show us a concerning aspect of the implications of the living environment on the health of our thyroid gland. Petrochemical and industrial toxins as well as pollutants like fluoride, chlorine or bromide are proven to reduce the activity of the thyroid gland leading to symptoms of hypothyroidism.

We shouldn’t be surprised of the increasing number of hypothyroid patients as we eat more and more toxic foods and are every day more exposed to pollution.

The thyroid gland is the primer controller of our energetic metabolism; toxins pump hormones out of the body and leave us unarmed against fats that we can no longer burn. The thyroid plays the most important role in keeping our weight and the rate of our metabolism in normal limits. Many today’s cases of obesity are due to the toxic effects of pollution on our metabolism and thyroid gland.

A doctor consulting an obese patient must always consider a possible implication of thyroid dysfunctions and ask about related factors like stress, allergies or toxins.

Food allergies and certain sensitivities upon different foods, deficiencies in selenium, zinc or fatty acids, iodine or tyrosine, might also trigger thyroid dysfunctions. Many physicians forget to investigate other possible causes of thyroid problems and try to treat all types of hypothyroidism with the standard drug Sinthroid. The curing doctor must play an active role in the treatment of the hypothyroid patient.

The basic symptoms of hypothyroidism are: depression, dry skin and hair, hair loss, constipation, fatigue, fluid retention, menstrual flow variations, weight gain, low sex appetite, muscle cramps, sluggishness, trouble getting out of bed in the morning, chipping or cracked fingernails.

The treatment in hypothyroidism must follow some basic steps for a quick recuperation; the cure with hormones will however last the whole life. The primer step is to eliminate toxins, allergens and nutritional deficiencies that cause the thyroid dysfunction. During the medication the patient must also exercise and take saunas and also eat foods containing substances that improve the thyroid function. The use of food supplements with selenium, zinc, vitamin A and D are very important for your recovery.

After a full examination, the endocrinologist must prescribe you the most adequate treatment for your personal needs; the combination of both thyroid hormones, T3 and T4 seems to be the most revolutionary technique for curing hypothyroidism.

Volvo Cars Expands Flexifuel Range

admin | January 13, 2009 in sustainability | Comments (0)

Volvo launched FlexiFuel cars powered by renewable bioethanol on some European markets. The green range is extended to include the new Volvo C30, which will be featuring eco-optimised FlexiFuel power.

“Interest in ethanol as a vehicle fuel is growing in Europe,” says Gerry Keaney, Senior Vice President Market, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars. “We are therefore expanding our range with additional models on a total of 9 markets. First to get Volvo’s FlexiFuel cars outside Sweden will be Britain, Ireland, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Norway.”

“It’s very encouraging that the market is expanding and that political initiatives are being taken,” continues Gerry Keaney. In France, the government has announced its plan to build 500 fuel stations for E85 this year. E85, a mix of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, will be produced locally from agricultural products like sugar-beet and several grains. At present, there are 23 plants producing ethanol in Europe and said number is expected to rise to more than 60 next year. In said territory, about 1.8 million liters of ethanol are produced every year and this capacity is expected to increase threefold in 2008.

Ethanol, an entirely renewable fuel, is produced from about any biomass source. One method of generating ethanol is through fermentation of sugar. Ethanol is also known as ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol however, in common usage it is referred to simply as alcohol. As a vehicle fuel, ethanol creates very little pollution when burned.

According to the Renewable Fuels Association, as of November 2006; 107 grain ethanol biorefineries in the United States have the capacity to produce 5.1 billion gallons of ethanol annually. There are additional 56 construction projects underway in the US to boost ethanol production. They are expected to add 3.8 billion gallons of new capacity in the next 18 months.

Growth in American fuel ethanol production is attributed largely to financial incentives that exist when oil prices are in excess of a certain level, as ethanol typically costs under $1.50 per gallon to manufacture and is exempt from the $0.52 per gallon federal gasoline tax. Nonetheless, the biggest national fuel ethanol industries are in Brazil.

The C30, S40 and the V50, three of nine Volvo models, are now available in an environmentally optimized FlexiFuel alternative. These cars are powered by a four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that is capable of producing 125 horsepower. Bioethanol and gasoline are both filled in the same 55 liter tank. Volvo engine parts like fuel hoses, gaskets and valves are enhanced to stand the corrosive properties of ethanol. Also, the injection valves are reinforced and made larger to accommodate more fuel needs. E85 has lower energy content hence more fuel is injected into the engine. In addition, the cars also come with an updated software calibration designed for ethanol power. To monitor the mixture of fuels and to automatically blend ignition and injection, the automaker use sophisticated engine management system to do the tasks efficiently.

“A renewable fuel will not, on its own, be able to replace today’s fossil fuels, and the range of alternative fuels will probably be far wider in the future. Many different fuels and technologies will therefore be developed in parallel. Ethanol reduces dependency on fossil fuels and Volvo’s FlexiFuel programme thus makes a vital contribution to our strategy of environmental sustainability,” concluded Gerry Keaney.

Volvo Cars is expecting to sell 7,000 FlexiFuel cars this year; most are to be sold in Sweden.

How You Can Help Save The Environment By Maintaining You Car Properly

admin | in environment | Comments (0)

With fears of global warming, the care of our environment is continually becoming more of a concern for all. Vehicle owners are no exception, and in all actuality have more to consider than those without a vehicle. Controlling what goes into your vehicle and what comes out, and how much goes in and out, comes with the responsibility of owning a vehicle.

Basic vehicle maintenance will help the overall well being of your car, but will also help the environment. Maintenance on your vehicle should not be done just when the “Check Engine” light appears. Maintenance follows three timelines: one-time only, several times a year and regularly. Upon ownership of your vehicle, make the one-time purchase of a high quality gas cap and make a one time read through the vehicle’s owner manual. Although you probably have more exciting things to do then read a manual, it will be worth your time. Mark the pages that you might find helpful in the future. If you are purchasing a previously owned car and the manual is not with the car, many manuals can be found on the Internet.

Talk with your general maintenance person, such as the person who typically changes your oil. Do they have any maintenance schedule suggestions as to what should be done when? Creating a maintenance schedule and keeping track of everything you have had done on your vehicle is good for solving future problems or will possibly help increase the value of your car if you plan on selling it.

Included in this schedule should be: oil, transmission fluid and radiator coolant checks and changes, air conditioner checks, fuel, air and oil filter checks and changes, and finally, belt and hose checks.

Depending on your tire quality, check your tire PSI often. Tires with low inflation are dangerous, but also require your car to use more fuel.

Many places in the U.S. require emission testing for your vehicle. The discovery of a failing emissions system can mean a decreased fuel efficiency of up to 7 percent. Keep two things in mind about your vehicle’s emission. First, it is illegal to take out or damage any part of the emission system in your vehicle. Be cautious when making muffler enhancements on your vehicle as this could potentially affect the main emissions system. Second, catalytic converters have laws pertaining to the warranty, mileage and year of vehicle. Be sure you and your mechanic abide to these laws when making repairs or replacements.

Contact the EPA if you have questions about these laws. The person running your emissions test should also be able to assist you with questions pertaining to your vehicle’s emission system.

The Secret of Self-investment

admin | January 11, 2009 in sustainability | Comments (3)

“Success is about who you become. The big challenge is to become all that you have the possibility of becoming. You cannot believe what it does to the human spirit to maximize your human potential and stretch yourself to the limit.” -Jim Rohn

As a solo-entrepreneur you’re either starting a new business or intending to grow your existing business. Aside from getting the most obvious systems in place – technology, business and marketing plans, defining your product or services, and finances, what else is needed to be successful?

Self-Investment!

Companies have been bringing in corporate trainers for years. It’s good business to invest in programs that teach employees how to be better leaders, manage conflict, improve communication, increase sales effectiveness, become more confident, etc. Using a myriad of tools including personality and behavioral assessments, skill building techniques, and self-reflective exercises, many training programs empower people to develop both professionally and personally. Smart, right? Of course, the integration and sustainability of the information is dependent upon how much a person values self-development!

Having cutting edge technology, innovation, great products and services is not enough to guarantee sustained success. Why? Because people drive the success of a business. The greatest asset a company has is its workforce. To grow a business, you must also be growing your people!

What does that have to do with being a solo-entrepreneur? I’m so glad you asked!

If I had a $1.00 every time I heard someone say, “Just show me (or tell me) what I need to do to accelerate my business, build wealth, manage my time….” Many people believe that focusing solely on strategies to achieve external goals is the best way to achieve success.

The truth is that, for your business to flourish, you must be flourishing as a person. Looking to grow your business without investing in yourself is a plan to limit your business success. Your outside world (your life) is a reflection of your inside world (who you are). Who you are affects what you do (or don’t do!)

If your business and personal life is NOT flourishing, where are you looking for your solutions? Self-investment is a vital key in having a successful business AND a fulfilling life!

For a solo-entrepreneur, investing time, energy, and resources to grow yourself is a critical key in the level of success you achieve.

Here’s a great example:

One of my coaching clients (I’ll call Carol), is a single entrepreneur who owns a graphic design company. Relocating two years ago, she has been working long hours to jumpstart her business and build a name for herself in the area. Because of her hard work and marketing savvy, Carol has built a strong following very quickly. (Normally, business takes 3-5 years to build). In fact, her business is growing so fast, she is unable to keep up! You might be thinking, who wouldn’t want that? She should be celebrating, right?

She’s not! In fact she began feeling depressed. Working such a hectic schedule was beginning to take negative tolls on her. BIG FLAGS!!!!!

Here’s the rest of the story……

• Carol works 16 hour days and works on weekends because she fears losing business. Her private life is almost non-existent.

• A perfectionist, Carol put enormous pressure on herself in servicing her clients. She constantly feels stress and worries about keeping her clients happy. (They are usually thrilled with her results!) Even though she is highly talented, she’s tough on herself, and lives with fear and self-doubt.

• As a one woman- show, she manages every aspect of her business. And, having grown so quickly, she has no systems in place to help run her business efficiently. As a result, she feels overwhelmed and stressed with all the people and responsibilities she has to manage. Who wouldn’t?

• Her relationships with her husband and friends are suffering. She is so busy working, she has no time for the people and things she loves the most. Or, even time for herself!

• Despite all of her business success, she is concerned she is losing her enjoyment for her work. She has difficulty sleeping at night, unable to turn off her brain. She often feels exhausted. She feels more like a human doing than a human being.

If her outer world was in chaos, imagine how she felt on the inside!

Carol is a smart woman. She realized she was working harder, not smarter. What did she do? She understood she needed help to continue to grow her business and thrive as a person. She also realized that in order to change the way she was running her business (or more accurately, how her business was running her), she needed to look at herself.

So, she hired a personal and business coach (me!)

Some of the things we worked on together included:

1. Adding systems to work more efficiently

2. Developing strong marketing and business plans

3. Delegating administrative responsibilities to free up her time.

4. Identifying her values, vision and purpose

5. Time management

6. Extreme self-care

7. Designing strategies to help her stay focused and motivated

Motivated by the chaos and anxiety in her life, Carol has made huge progress in six short months. Choosing to make the investment in her business and herself, Carol is beginning to enjoy her work again and have a life!

Bottom line:

Learning more about who you are on the inside (your beliefs, core values, natural strengths, passions, innate talents) is the KEY INGREDIENT to making decisions that produce deep satisfaction and extraordinary results. By bringing who you are into the equation, you can view a full spectrum of choices and solutions to reach more satisfying and richer outcomes- like bringing Technicolor to a black and white picture!

Sexual Harassment in the Work Environment

admin | in environment | Comments (4)

Sexual Harassment in the Work Environment
Management, which show how personnel practitioners are positively tackling equal opportunities issues. EEOC addresses equal opportunities in work environment. These policies are designed to encourage equal opportunities by educating workers and decision-makers, and by positive actions to address inequality wherever it exists. The spirit or intention of equal opportunities legislation, as well as the letter of the law, is important (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Website, 2005).
Discrimination on the grounds of sex or on grounds of people’s married status is unlawful, except in certain special circumstances. However, employers and designated training bodies can take positive action to promote equality. For example, they can set up management courses for existing women workers only, if women are underrepresented at managerial levels. Another positive action is to encourage applications from one sex. But do note that discrimination is not allowed in the actual selection decision.
According to statistical results the number of complaints has increased since 1996 in spite of the fact that laws and penalties are prevalent. For this reason, the main question concerns the causes of complaints and common sense of organizational authorities unable to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.
Primarily, it should be mentioned that both direct and indirect sexual harassment are illegal. Direct discrimination, connected with sexual harassment, means allowing gender to influence employment decisions, e.g. when sexual harassment concerning promotion decisions or pay. “Harassment occurs when a supervisor conditions the granting of an economic benefit upon receipt of sexual favors from a subordinate or punishes the subordinate for refusing to submit to his or her request(s)” (Feminism and women’s studies, 2005).
Indirect discrimination occurs if conditions that effectively create discrimination are applied. These could be certain criteria on job specifications or advertisements if they tend to preclude women or men. For example, the Civil Service used to restrict direct entry to executive grades to those under 26 years old. It can no longer do so because this would discriminate against women who return to work after bringing up families.
Sexual harassment at work is expensive, stressful and disruptive for both employers and employees. But even if it happened both employers and employees agree that early, constructive discussion can produce solutions before problems escalate and working relationships break down. If the problem is not solved and results in a tribunal case, both sides face a protracted, unsettling experience. Any employee who has been discriminated against has a right to be protected by law.
According to the statistical results, the number of compalines increased during 1996-2000 FY in contrast to the previous period. In 1990, the number of sexual harassment charge receipts filed with the EEOC was 2,217 (3,6%) while in 2000 FY there were about 5, 332 (6,7%). This figures suggests that organisaitons had to paid a lot of money for those who filed suits. It is explained by the fact that “the employer is responsible for sexual harassment by its supervisory personnel–regardless of whether the specific acts complained of were authorized or even forbidden by the employer, and regardless of whether the employer knew or should have known of their occurrence” (Sexual Harassment at Work, 2005).
Taking into account ligal dementions, it is evident that organisaiotns are not interested in loosing money been accused in sexual harassment in the workplace. For instance, at the federal level, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits sexual harassment. The case of sexual harassment needs to be proved, but not the motive or intention of the defendant to discriminate. The fact that sexual harassment has been taken seriously by unions and industrial tribunals – the EOC won two cases about it in 1983 under the Sexual Discrimination Act – despite initial ridicule, especially in the popular press, suggests that feminist concerns have become more publicly acceptable. “Sexual harassment wasn’t considered discriminatory until the 1980′s and then, the number of claims were few” (Igasaki, 2004).
There are other signs of responsiveness to feminist criticism – for example in the treatment of women who have faced sexual harassment. Though there is disturbing evidence that at the end of 1990s only a small minority of women felt able to report sexual harassment and continuing criticism of treatment of the women by police and the courts, the police have begun to respond. Nevertheless, feminism and human rights movements have opened new opportunities for women to report sexual harassment cases. Many of women are encouraged to report such cases in order to prevent them. “Quid pro quo sexual harassment occurs when an individual’s submission to or rejection of sexual advances or conduct of a sexual nature is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting the individual or the individual’s submission to such conduct is made a term or condition of employment (Legal Definitions, 2005).
This situation can be explained by the fact that for a long time, public concern was expressed over the continuing failure of police and courts to follow up cases of sexual harassment where employees are at risk. It was found that women found the s court very unhelpful if they complained of women to bring cases of discrimination to tribunals.
Nevertheless, in the 1990s the situation has changed. EEOC provisions allow for positive action by employers to train and promote women, included sexual harassment as a form of discrimina¬tion, and established leave for fathers as well as mothers after the birth of a baby.
Today, there has in addition been a significant shift in attitudes towards greater acceptance of equality, despite abundant evidence of continu¬ing prejudice, inertia and discrimination; and there are indications of a greater willingness to respond sympathetically to women suffering sexual harassment or physical violence from men. But the role of groups and individuals committed to achieving equal rights and fair treatment is clearly still essential.
It should be mentioned that economic position of the majority of women depends on how jobs are created and allocated in the new economy that is emerging, and how Government distributes welfare and assists provision for increased leisure. The evolution of post-industrial society could, however, crucially affect the future position of women, and mean either a genuine liberation for many previously tied to routine and low-paid jobs or a new subordination in a masculine-dominated high-technology society in which women’s roles and concerns are treated as peripheral. It is therefore vital that women help determine the nature of this society. For this reason, there are some evidence that women using this area to obtain money by filing a suit.
The weak point of legislation is broad definition of the term “sexual harassment” which can be applied to many situations in the work place. According to US Department of State sexual harassment is defined as “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when: (1) an employment decision affecting that individual is made because the individual submitted to or rejected the unwelcome conduct; or (2) the unwelcome conduct unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or abusive work environment” (US Department of State, 2005). The term “unwelcome conduct” does not defined the nature of sexual harassment itself, and can be differently interpreted.
Another form of solving the problem of sexual harassment is mediation. Recently, EEOC uses this alternative forms of Dispute Resolutions. Nevertheless, many women prefer to file a suit instead of this form. So, Why? The only possible answer is that they will receive pretty money if is able to prove sexual harassment case. In 2000 $54.6 millions was paid as a sexual harassment charges (Sexual Harassment Charges, 2004).
Mediation is a very useful alternative form to the traditional investigative or litigation process. Mediation or third party intervention is used in conflicts. Mediator plays the core role here. Belonging to an independent part of the process he/she helps the parties of the conflicts being objective. The ability of a third party to resolve conflict can influence the outcome of it.
Discussions on the role and the importance of the rule of law and the judicial system are typically characterized by noble pronouncementsfor example, about the independence of the judiciary, the need to improve access to jus¬tice. These are rather abstract terms, however, and they hide the complicated social realities that lie beneath them and give them whatever meaning they have.
Proponents of better judicial systems and their requirements also are asso¬ciated with efforts to measure what a successful legal and judicial system would be. The focus again is on specifying what is needed in the internal workings of the judicial system. “An increasing proportion of the cases involve situations where a hostile environment is created for an employee. The harassment here can come from a manager or from other sources. Here, unwelcome advances are made serious enough to interfere with a worker’s ability to do her or his work” (Igasaki, 2004).
Those seek¬ing quantitative indicators can also seek to measureeven if only through opinion pollsother factors such as the independence and prestige of the ju¬diciary. The hope riding on such efforts is that they will encourage key local actors to do whatever it takes to improve ratings. “it is essential to remember that it is not the intention of the perpetrator that is key in deciding whether harassment has occurred, but whether the behaviour is unacceptable by reasonable normal standards, and is disadvantageous or unwelcome to the person subjected to it” (Twomey, 1998).
It is evident that a shift in attitudes towards greater acceptance of equality, despite abundant evidence of continu¬ing prejudice, inertia and discrimination; and there are indications of a greater willingness to respond sympathetically to women suffering sexual harassment or physical violence from men, allows some women to use it in order to obtain money. But the role of groups and individuals committed to achieving equal rights and fair treatment is clearly still essential.
In general, sexual harassment suits have a very negative impact on working environment. Organizational environment is reinforced through the system of rites and rituals, patterns of com¬munication, the informal organisation, expected patterns of behaviour and perceptions of the psychological contract. The sexual harassment cases result in lack of communication and prevent organizations to achieve the goals. Positive climate, free from prejudices and complaints helps to provide satisfaction of members’ social needs, and a sense of personal identity and belonging because it is upon the loyalty essential to successful industrial relations.
It provides additional channels of communication and provides a means of motivation, for example, through status, social inter¬action, variety in routine jobs, and informal methods of work. Informal type or mediation creates a feeling of stability and security, and through informal ‘norms’ of behaviour can exercise a form of control over members. Positive organisational climate influences the level of morale and attitudes which members of the organisation bring to bear on their work performance and personal relationships.
If employees are under pressure been accused in sexual harassment or other discriminating issue, they feel frustrated which resulted in poor organizational performance. In reality, many conflicts can be resolved without filing a suit, but women prefer to use this form of protection in order to obtain money.
